Flash Player detection fails with websites that use VBScript detectionProducts affected

Issue

When you try to open a website that uses VBScript detection for Flash Player in Microsoft Internet Explorer, you receive an error similar to the following:

"You either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Macromedia's Flash Player."

Solution

This VBScript detection issue is resolved by running the Flash Player uninstaller released on May 11 2006 (version 3.0.0.17) or later, and reinstalling the latest Flash Player.

  1. Download and save the Adobe Flash Player uninstaller to your desktop from Uninstall Flash Player  | Windows (tn_14157).
  2. Quit all applications, including all Internet Explorer and AIM, Yahoo, MSN or other messengers.
  3. Run the Flash Player uninstaller that you saved to your desktop.
  4. Install the latest Adobe Flash Player from the Flash Player Download Center

The Flash Player uninstaller fixes permissions in the Windows registry and allows Flash Player to install successfully.

Additional information

This detection failure is due to an incomplete installation of Flash Player. Specifically, version-dependent registry keys used by the VBScript detection are missing, such as HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.8 for Flash Player 8. This detection failure can happen even if the latest Flash Player is installed and the Flash8b.ocx file is in the C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash folder.
