Known Limitations of Raster Effects

Introduction
Issues related to Raster effects in FreeHand MX:

Objects that have Raster Effects applied are printing low resolution
Gausian Blur effect fails to print correctly when printing PostScript
Bevel and Shadow effects are not working well together
For best results with Raster Effects use the latest version of QuickTime (Macintosh)

Objects that have Raster Effects applied are printing low resolution
The default resolution for Raster Effects in FreeHand is 72dpi. The resolution can be increased to allow for the selected printer. To increase the resolution of Raster Effects, do the following:

1 Select File > Document Settings > Raster Effects Settings...
2 From the Resolution popup select a predefined PPI

You can also type a custom resolution into the field if you need a resolution other than those predefined. For PostScript printing the resolution can be 1.5 times the linescreen of the Raster Image Processor (RIP).

Note:Increasing this to a higher resolution will greatly effect performance in FreeHand MX.

Gausian Blur effect fails to print correctly when printing PostScript
Objects with Raster Effects like the Gausian Blur produce a halo when printed to a PostScript device. For details, refer to Why do some objects print with a halo? (TechNote 18502).

Bevel and Shadow effects are not working well together
When scaling an object that overlaps other objects that also have both bevels and drop shadows applied you may see strange results in the redraw of the objects. If this happens, change the stacking order of the properties of the object so that the drop shadow is in an opposite position relative to the bevel.

For more information about changing the stacking order of properties in the Object panel refer to the online help located under the Help menu.

For best results with Raster Effects use the latest version of QuickTime (Macintosh)
During the testing cycle of FreeHand MX it was found that when running Mac OS 9.1 some effects achieved better results when QuickTime 6 was installed. Below are some issues you may see if running an older version of QuickTime:

1 Gradient Mesh or Blur effects that have been exported as PDF will display with a blackened background when using older versions of QuickTime
2 Grouped objects that contain Raster Effects which are exported as JPG will not print completely
