Setting up a Project in HomeSite 4.5 or Studio 4.5

The following illustration shows how to create a new Project in HomeSite 4.5 or Studio 4.5.

What is a project? A project is a collection of files that you use to develop your website. Files of any type can be included in a project, for example, HTML files, Cascading Style Sheets, images, application code, scripts, and more.

After setting up a FTP connection, you must create a project to deploy your website. You create projects using HomeSite's project tools.

The following illustration shows the creation of a new Project in HomeSite:

  1. Click the Projects Tab to display the project tools.
  2. Click the New Project button.
  3. New Project dialog box will appear.
  4. Enter a name for the project in the project Name box.
  5. Enter the directory where you want the .apf file saved in the Location box or click the Browse button to locate the directory using the Select Directory dialog box.
  6. If the directory you specified in the Location box has files and subfolders that you would like to have included in your project, leave the Add all files in subfolders option enabled.
If you do not want to include files and subfolders from the Location folder in your project, deselect the Add all files in subfolders option.
  7. If you want to limit the files that are included in your project to certain types, click the File Types drop-down list and choose the file types that you want included. Alternatively, you can enter the file extensions for the types you want included, separated by a semi-colon.
Note: If you did not opt to have files and subfolders included in your project, this option will have no effect.
  8. Click OK. The project is displayed in the projects tab. An .apf file is added to the location you specified in step 5.

Now that you have set up a FTP connection and created a New Project, you can deploy your website. Deployment, also known as uploading, is the process of copying all of the files in your project to the host server. Details on how to deploy projects can be found in TechNote 17450.

.apf file
References to the files in your project are stored in an .apf file. The .apf file is created and saved when you create a new project. As you make changes to your projects contents, the .apf file is updated automatically.

When you create a new project, you must specify a folder to hold the .apf file. This folder must already exist somewhere on your computer. If you don't have an existing folder that you want to place the .apf file in, create one using Windows Explorer.
