Setting up FTP in HomeSite or Studio 4.5

How to setup an FTP connection in HomeSite or ColdFusion Studio 4.5.

  1. The Local Files and Remote Files tabs that were used in the previous release are now combined in a single Files tab in the Resources pane. You can now manage both both local and remote files from the same tab.

The Files tab functionality has also been integrated withWindows Explorer, allowing you to work with files from either location.

For more information, see the "Managing Files" topic in theUsing HomeSite reference in the Help tab.
  2. You access remote servers by choosing Allaire FTP & RDS from the dropdown drive list at the top of the Files tab.
  3. After selecting Allaire FTP & RDS in the drive list, right-click on it in the server list and select Add FTP Server...
  4. Follow the steps below to complete the Configure FTP Server dialog and add the server to your list:
    1. Description is for your use. Enter any name that will remind you what account you are connecting to.
    2. Host Name is the name of the server you are connecting to. In some cases you will need to enter ftp (ftp.allaire.com) in the Host Name but in most cases you will not. In this case, to connect to Allaire's ftp server you would just enter allaire.com. Adding the ftp prefix will not connect to this account.
    3. Initial Directory is optional with most accounts. This is needed if your ISP supplies you with the information to log on in a specified folder. That specific folder would be your Initial Directory.

Example: if you wanted to connect to http://www.allaire.com/accounts, then you would enter accounts for the Initial Directory.
    4. Relative from server-assigned directory is checked to specify whether the initial directory should be set from the server root.
    5. Username is to enter your username. If you want the account to prompt you for a Username, then leave this blank.
    6. Password is to enter your password. If you want the account to prompt you for a password, then leave this blank.

Tip: You could enter in your Username and leave the Password blank. This would only prompt you for your Password rather then your Username and Password.
    7. ROOT URL is optional. Here you would enter the http address of your site. For Allaire, it would be http://www.allaire.com.

Note: Even if you connect to an initial directory, you do not need to add it to the address here. You may in some cases; that would have to be determined by testing it.

This feature is used so that you are able to browse your changes when you are working on a file that was opened from a remote server. You would need to save the file first before the changes appear on the site.
    8. Remote Port is set to 21 by default. This setting is widely used by ISPs. If this number is different, then your ISP will need to inform you of the port number to use.
    9. Request Timeout is the time, in seconds, that it takes to connect to the FTP server. Most likely you will not need to adjust this. It may be required if you are connecting to a slow connection that requires more time to connect.
    10. Assume UTC files times is used if incorrect dates are appearing in your FTP file list.
    11. Use Disable Passive Mode when passive mode is not needed to connect. Also, if you try to connect and you get no results try selecting this option.
After you complete all the entries, click OK.
  5. Before you can connect to the server, refresh the Files tab by deselecting the Allaire FTP & RDS icon in the dropdown drive list and then selecting it again.
  6. To connect to the server, double click on the server name.
