Dreamweaver MX Updater installation issues

The following issues have been identified that may affect installation of the Macromedia Dreamweaver MX version 6.1 Updater.

Note: The updater described in this TechNote updates only Dreamweaver MX. Refer to the Dreamweaver Updaters page for information on other updates.

Disable Dreamweaver extensions prior to installation

As noted in the Dreamweaver MX Updater Release Notes, you should disable all extensions in Dreamweaver MX before installing the updater. If you install the updater while Dreamweaver MX extensions are enabled, the extensions will disappear from the Dreamweaver menus. Please refer to the Release Notes for specific instructions.

Disable virus protection software prior to installation

As noted in General guidelines for software installation (TechNote tn_3533), you should disable any virus protection software before installing any Macromedia product. This applies to installation of the Dreamweaver MX Updater.

Note: You may restart virus protection after installation. You can also adjust your virus protection settings to optimize Dreamweaver MX performance. Please review Slow system performance using UltraDev (TechNote tn_16104), which also applies to Dreamweaver MX.

Back up site definitions prior to installation

While the updater installation should maintain site definitions, some customers have reported they lost site definitions. As a precaution, back up your site definitions prior to installation. This does not apply to site files themselves. These files are never touched during installation.

To back up site definitions using Dreamweaver's Export Site Definition feature

Dreamweaver MX contains an Export Site Definition feature which allows sites to be backed up one at a time.

  1. Choose Site > Edit Sites.
  2. Choose the site name from the list of sites.
  3. Click Export. Follow the prompts.
  4. Repeat this procedure for each site you want to back up.

This process creates a file that you will need to save somewhere. If you ever need to import a site, follow the steps below:

  1. Choose Site > Edit Sites.
  2. Click the Import button.
  3. Browse to locate the file that you exported during the Export Site Definition process, and select the appropriate file.
  4. Click OK. The site will now appear in the list of sites in the Edit Sites dialog box.
"You cannot update a trial version of Dreamweaver" error (Macintosh only)

As noted in the Dreamweaver MX Updater Release Notes, the Dreamweaver MX Updater may incorrectly identify the installed version of Dreamweaver MX as a trial version. This can happen if you have previously installed the purchased version of Dreamweaver MX in the same location as the Trial version. In this case, when you attempt to install the updater, it may report the error: "The updater cannot update a trial version of Dreamweaver." To resolve this problem: in the Dreamweaver MX directory, rename the file VSetupT to VSetupT.bak, then restart the Dreamweaver MX Updater.

"This Folder Does Not Contain Dreamweaver MX" (Windows only)

During updater installation, some users are encountering this error. There are two identified situations where this may occur:

  • The updater defaults to the Contribute directory instead of the Dreamweaver MX directory.
Browse to the Dreamweaver MX directory (the directory that contains the Dreamweaver.exe file). The updater should then install correctly.
  • The updater has already been installed.
Right-click on Dreamweaver.exe (not a shortcut but the actual file), select Properties, click Versions tab, and select Product Version. If the version is 6.1.1842, then the updater has already been installed.

If you continue to experience trouble installing the updater, please check the following:

  • Make sure you are logged into Windows as an administrator.
  • Make sure you are logged into Windows with the same user account used during Dreamweaver MX installation.
  • Check the Dreamweaver program folder for the fileVSetupT.exe (in the same folder as Dreamweaver.exe). If it exists, rename it toVSetupT.bak, and try installing the updater again.

If problems persist, please contact Macromedia Customer Service.

The Dreamweaver MX Updater is available for all localized versions of Dreamweaver MX

Localized versions of the Dreamweaver MX Updater for the different language versions of Dreamweaver MX are now available. The English version of the updater should not be installed on localized versions of Dreamweaver MX, so be sure to install the correct updater for your language version.
