FreeHand update overview
Products included in Macromedia Studio MX and those that are branded with the MX logo are designed to share common user interface elements and comply with a common set of standards. This improves cross product compatibility and increases efficiency. Read the following information for more details about the FreeHand update.
Note: If you purchased FreeHand 10 as part of the Macromedia Studio MX, you already have FreeHand 10.0.1 and do not need to read further.
Download and Installation
FreeHand 10.0.1 was not designed as an "updater". There is no small patch file to download and run. The installer is the full application installer. Because of this it's necessary to uninstall FreeHand 10.0 prior to installing FreeHand 10.0.1.

Common Studio MX dictionary
In the current Studio MX family, Fireworks MX and Dreamweaver MX use a common shared dictionary. You can now point the revised FreeHand to this same dictionary.
To share the Studio MX dictionary:
- Follow Step 1 from above to open Preferences
- To the right of the Personal Dictionary path is a browse button indicated by three dots (...). Select the browse button and browse to:
- Mac OS X
OS X:User:username:Library:Application Support:Macromedia:Common:Personal Dictionary:Personal Dictionary.tlx - Mac OS 9.x
In this version of the OS there is no common folder to have a shared file in. So you would need to create a common folder or designate one of the applications as the common application and define the preferences to point to that application. The path to the user dictionary file location is:
hard drive:Applications:Macromedia FreeHand 10:userdic.tlx - Windows (all versions)
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Macromedia\Common\Personal Dictionary.tlx
- Mac OS X
Designed for Windows XP
With the release of the studio compliant FreeHand, FreeHand meets the requirements for Windows XP. Windows XP requires user specific data to be installed and maintained in the users folder. FreeHand 10 already meets similar requirements for Macintosh OS X.
- English folder
The English folder is the location of the preferences and other configuration files that FreeHand uses to remember the application is configured. In previous versions of FreeHand this folder was located in the FreeHand folder.
With this release of FreeHand these files are now located at:C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Macromedia\FreeHand\10\English
- First Run folder
The First Run folder is a new folder that has been added to this release of FreeHand. This folder contains the data file that will be copied to a users folder when they launch and exit FreeHand for the first time.
Note: In a corporate environment this folder could be modified by the Administrator of the machine to include modifications like a corporate color library, default files etc. These changes would be installed in a new users folder and would make standardization much easier.
Studio MX serial number support
In addition to the FreeHand 10.0 serial numbers (FHW100-XXXXX... or FHM100-XXXXX...) Studio MX numbers (WSW600-XXXXX... or WSM600-XXXXX...) are now supported.
Tabbed panels
The way panels are displayed and arranged has changed. For more information about this change, see Grouping Panels in Macromedia Studio MX: FreeHand 10 (TechNote 16342).
