Error when working with files over 26 characters in length
Issue
When renaming, creating or moving files in Macromedia Dreamweaver MX, the following error occurs: "You have entered a file name that is too long. Please enter another file name."
Reason
Although Mac OS X allows file names up to 255 characters in length, Dreamweaver MX restricts file name length to 26 characters, including period and file extension (.html, .htm, .txt).
Solution
The best solution is to avoid file names over 26 characters in length. Existing files exceeding this limit can be opened and saved via the file menu (File > Open, File > Save), but site management options, such as the updatingof links when files are moved, will be affected when file names longer than 26 characters are used.
When renaming files, it's always best to rename them in the site window. This method will allow Dreamweaver to update links.
Steps to rename files in the site window:| 1 | Select desired file. |
| 2 | Right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Mac) to open contextual menu. |
| 3 | Choose Rename. |
