Macromedia Flash Player 5 does not work in OS X

Issue

The Macromedia Flash Player 5 will not work in OS X, even after updating the OS.

Reason

OS X and/or Internet Explorer for OS X may not be completely updated.

Note: The version numbers for Internet Explorer for OS X may be somewhat misleading. The version of Internet Explorer that ships with OS X is 5.1b1 (5502). This browser will not work with the updated Flash Player for Mac OS X. However, an updated version of Internet Explorer is 5.1b1 (3408). Though the release number is lower, this is a later version, and it will work with the current Macromedia Flash Player.

Solution

After initially updating OS X, restart the system and run the updater again (System Preferences > Software Update > Update Now), restarting after each update until the OS does not allow any further updates. Then, install the Flash Player according to the instructions in the Readme included with the download.
