'No such interface' error when installing Flash on Windows 98
Issue
When installing Flash 5 on some Windows 98 systems, an error message appears stating "Setup failed to launch installation engine", followed by one of the following errors:
- No such interface supported
- Class not Registered
- Error extracting support files
- Error installing Ikernel.exe (0x any number)
- Access is denied
- Error loading Type Library/DLL
Reason
These errors are machine specific errors and usually occur because of a corruption in the system. This can affect any Setup program that uses InstallShield.
Solution
Microsoft is aware of this issue. Usually, reinstalling Internet Explorer will resolve this problem.
After reinstalling Internet Explorer, restart and try installing Flash again.
For additional troubleshooting steps, please refer to the following documents on InstallShield's Web site:
- ERRMSG: Ikernel Errors: "Class Not Registered", "No Such Interface Supported" (Article Q105146)
- INFO: Initialization Error Troubleshooting (Article Q104985)
- Initialization Error Troubleshooting (Article Q104986)
If all of the above steps do not resolve the issue, reinstalling Windows 98 should be a last step to resolve. For more information, refer to How to Reinstall Windows 98 (Microsoft article Q250928).
