TechNote (Archived)

Macromedia Flash Player cannot write to a text file

Issue

Flash alone does not have the ability to write variables to a text file.

Solution

There are two methods outside of Flash that can be used to save variables to a text file:

  • With Macromedia Director 5.0 and above, follow the steps listed in FileIO Xtra examples (TechNote 03192). This TechNote explains how use the FileIO Xtra in Director to write a text file from a Shockwave movie. The Flash SWF file can be imported into Director and the variables from the Flash movie can be written to the text file using the Shockwave Player.
  • With an external server-side script (such as ASP, CGI, or JavaScript) variables from a Flash SWF can be written to a text file on the server.
