QuickTime movies exported from Flash won't import to iMovie

Issue

QuickTime movies exported from Flash cannot be imported by Apple's iMovie video editor.

Reason

IMovie only imports DV stream movies. DV stream movies are streaming digital video captured directly from a video camera or other video source. QuickTime movies exported from Flash aren't in DV stream format, so the iMovie importer can't 'see' them in the import dialog.

Solution

Convert the QuickTime movie exported from Flash into a DV stream. This can be done using QuickTime Pro, which can be purchased from Apple's Web site.

To convert a Flash exported Quicktime movie to DV Stream using Quicktime Pro:

1 Open the Quicktime movie in the Quicktime Player.
2

Choose File > Export.

3

In the export popup, select "Movie to DV Stream". Use the default settings.

4 Type a new name for the movie and choose Save.

The newly saved movie will now be available in iMovie's import dialog. Apple notes that the file size of the DV Stream version of the movie may be larger than the the movie exported from Flash. For more information see Apple's Support site.
