Netscape 6 and Macromedia Flash Player

The Netscape 6 browser has unique issues that require special attention for Macromedia Flash developers. The Netscape browsers have been fully rewritten, causing some changes to functionality. Macromedia and Netscape are working to resolve the known issues listed in this document.

Update: Most of these issues have be resolved with the release of Netscape 6.2 and Flash Player 6 r40 or later. This TechNote is specific to Netscape 6.0 and 6.1 with Flash Players earlier than 6 r40.

  • Script Communication
Attempts to send JavaScript commands with FSCommand actions will not work, nor will attempts to control the Macromedia Flash Player with JavaScript. For more information, refer to FSCommand problems in Netscape 6 and Mozilla (TechNote tn_14625).

Note: This issue is resolved with Netscape 6.2 using Flash Player 6 r40 or later.
  • Backspace in Text Field navigates to previous page
Use of the Backspace key when an Input Text Field is active sends the browser window to the previous page instead of deleting a character. For more information, refer to Hitting Backspace key in text field sends Netscape 6 to previous browser page (TechNote tn_15042).

Note: An Input Text Field is active when the field contains a blinking I-Beam cursor.
  • Input Text Fields on Macintosh
Netscape 6 does not allow entry of text into Input Text Fields on a Macintosh.
  • GetURL Post Method Fails
Send using POST fails in Netscape 6.0 on Mac OS 9.x. This issue is resolved with Netscape 6.2 using Flash Player 6 r40 or later.
