Customized version of Menus.xml error message

Issue

While installing an extension with an obsolete version of the Macromedia Extension Manager, the following error message appears:

Due to having a customized version of Menus.xml, one or more of the menu changes for this extension couldn't be made exactly as requested. The changes were made in locations near those requested. The extension will still work so it is being installed.

In some cases, certain menus or menu options are missing or disabled following the installation of the extension.

Reason

These errors pertain to a known issue with version 1.2 of the Macromedia Extension Manager. In this version of the Extension Manager, installing an extension can sometimes corrupt Macromedia Dreamweaver 4's Menus.xml file. The extensions themselves do not cause the error”which can occur during the installation of any extension.

Solution

Recent versions of the Extension Manager fix this issue and can be downloaded from the Macromedia Exchange. To prevent the error message from appearing while you are installing an extension and to restore your menu options, you will need to:

  • Replace the corrupted Menus.xml file with its back up version.
  • Reset all the installed extensions.

These steps will walk you through the above process:

  3. Download and install the latest version of the Macromedia Extension Manager, the from the Extension Manager download page.
  4. Make a copy of your Menus.xbk file. Be sure to save your backup copy of this file somewhere safe and easy to find, as you might need to access it later.
    • Windows: The approximate path to the Menus.xbk file is:
      C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Dreamweaver 4\Configuration\Menus\Menus.xbk
    • Macintosh: The approximate path to the file is:
      Mac HD:Applications:Macromedia:Dreamweaver 4:Configuration:Menus:Menus.xbk
  5. Delete the Menus.xml file associated with Dreamweaver 4.
    • Windows: The approximate path to the Menus.xml file is:

Note: The Menus.xbk file that installs with Dreamweaver is a backup copy of Menus.xml. Another way to get a fresh copy of Menus.xml is to download the file:
