Some Dreamweaver 4 behaviors do not work in Netscape 6

Issue

Some Dreamweaver 4 behaviors do not work properly when pages are viewed in AOL Netscape 6.0. The behaviors include:

  • Drag Layer.
  • Set Text of Layer.
  • Set Text of Frame.

Also, neither the Check Target Browser feature under the File menu nor the "Events For" list in the Behaviors Panel include Netscape 6.

Reason

Netscape 6 was formally released a few weeks prior to the Dreamweaver 4 release. This schedule did not provide sufficient time to test and fix every compatibility problem found with this new browser. However, an updater is now available which modifies the File menu and the Behaviors panel and also allows these behaviors to work with Netscape 6.

Solution

Solution 1: download Dreamweaver 4.01 Updater (recommended)

The Dreamweaver 4.01 Updater includes all of the fixes in the Netscape 6 Pack Updater (see below) and addresses many other issues as well. These additional issues, including those dealing with Visual SourceSafe, WebDAV, and Macintosh OS 9.1, are explained in greater depth in the 4.01 Updater Release Notes.

Solution 2: download the Netscape 6 Pack Updater

Download and install the Netscape 6 Pack for Dreamweaver 4 update to fix these Netscape 6 compatibility issues.

Downloading and installing the Netscape 6 updater
  1. Double-click the compressed file appropriate for your operating system.

Netscape 6.0 pack for Windows (21K)

Netscape 6.0 pack for Macintosh (165K)

Note: A utility program such as Winzip (Windows) or Stuffit Expander (Macintosh) can be used to expand the files.
  2. The expansion utility will unpack the file into a standard MXP Dreamweaver extension.
  3. Double-click the netscape6pack.mxp file.
  4. Follow instructions to automatically install the extension.
Establishing compatibility with Netscape 6 (after installing either Updater)

HTML documents created after you install either updater will be compatible with Netscape 6. However, the JavaScript behaviors on existing HTML documents will need to be reapplied after Dreamweaver has been updated. You will only need to do this reapplication once for each behavior used on the document, as described below.

Reapplying JavaScript behaviors in existing HTML documents
  1. Open a existing document:
    • with the Drag Layer, Set Text of Layer, or Set Text of Frame behavior.
    • with the Swap Image behavior if it will be used in a frameset.
    • which uses the Insert > Interactive Images > Navigation Bar feature (since it relies on the Swap Image behavior) if it will be used in a frameset.
  2. Select an object on the document to which an instance of the behavior is attached.
  3. Choose Windows > Behaviors if the Behaviors panel is not already open.
  4. Select the behavior in the Behaviors panel.
  5. Delete the behavior by clicking the Minus (;) button on the Behaviors panel or by pressing Backspace (Windows) or Delete (Macintosh).
  6. Click the Plus (+) button and select the behavior again.
  7. Enter the behavior's parameters in the dialog box.
  8. Click OK. This re-application of the behavior will update all instances of this behavior on the page so each instance will work with Netscape 6.
  9. Repeat steps 2 through 8 for the other behaviors on the document which need to be reapplied.
  10. Apply this process for any other existing HTML documents which have the above behaviors.
