Saving a file in Dreamweaver on Windows 2000 to an NT server

Issue

Attempting to save a file in Dreamweaver 3 on Windows 2000 Professional to an NT server causes an "Access Denied" error message to appear.

Reason

The above error message may occur if the local root folder is on a mapped network drive.

Disclaimer: Dreamweaver's site management feature is designed to work with a local root folder housed on the user's machine”not across a network. While it is possible to define your local root folder on a server or a mapped network drive, you are advised against doing this. Below are several workarounds that are provided for users who have chosen to define their local root folder somewhere other than on their local machine and have received the "Access Denied" error message; however, Macromedia will not be able to offer Technical Support for difficulties resulting from the failure to define the site locally.

Solution

Select a local root folder on your computer's hard disk for your site files during the site definition. See How to define a site in Dreamweaver (TechNote 14028) for more instructions.

Workarounds for "Access Denied" message

Either of these methods may resolve the "Access Denied" issue. Again, Macromedia Technical Support cannot be offered for troubleshooting problems associated with a local root folder stored on a server or across a network.

  • Method 1
Have your System Administrator provide you with administrative privileges for the directory on the NT server to which you are saving your files.
  • Method 2
    1. Choose File > Save As. You will get the "Access Denied" error message.
    2. Then choose File > Save. Doing this will enable subsequent saves to this directory.
