Some files upload during FTP while others do not

Issue
Some files upload and others do not.

ReasonSeveral factors can cause some files to upload while others do not. They are listed below with possible solutions for each.

Solution
The following is a list of factors and possible solutions for partial uploads:
Illegal file or folder names
Illegal file or folder names can interrupt a transfer. ConsultNaming strategies for Dreamweaver, UltraDev, and various interpreters (TechNote 14610) for an overview of characters in names likely to cause such an interruption.
Low FTP Time Out
A low FTP Time Out setting can prevent large files from transferring. If the files not transferring are larger than others that are transferring successfully, increase the FTP Time Out setting. For instructions on how to do this see Setting up Dreamweaver's FTP connection (TechNote 14787).
Disconnect After Minutes Idle
Dreamweaver's FTP tool can time out during a long transfer. If Disconnect After Minutes Idle is checked in Preferences, deselect it. For instructions on how to do this see Setting up Dreamweaver's FTP connection (TechNote 14787).

Thumbnail images
Some image editors create icon files corresponding to the image files in order to display the icon for that file as a thumbnail of the image on a Macintosh. Icon files do not display in the Site window, will not upload, and usually interrupt the transfer of an entire site. Set your image editor not to create icon files and upload all image files into a new image folder on the server.

Busy network
A server that goes offline or busy traffic on the network can cause problems. Try transferring at a different time of day.

Server using WUFTP v2.6
The server may be using WUFTP v2.6. If only files two directories deep do not transfer, or you get a "Cannot create directory, directory already exists" error message when trying to upload, which you think is incorrect, check the Site FTP Log to find whether WUFTP v2.6 is being used [see Checking the FTP log (TechNote 14536)]. If this is the case, please see Error Message using Put or Check-in files: Cannot create directory...it already exists (TechNote 14162).
