Opening FLA files with previous versions of Macromedia Flash
Starting with Macromedia Flash MX, you can save an FLA as a Macromedia Flash 5 FLA. The resulting FLA can then be opened and edited with version 5 of the authoring tool. To save as a Flash 5 FLA, select Save > Save as Type > Flash 5 Document. Macromedia Flash MX automatically alerts you to incompatible features in the content you save. Macromedia Flash MX cannot save as Macromedia Flash 4 FLA files, so FLA documents created with Macromedia Flash MX cannot be opened and edited with version 4 of the authoring tool.
Previous versions of the authoring tool (versions 5 and earlier) cannot save as an older version FLA. Once an FLA file is saved in a more recent version of Flash, it can no longer be opened or edited with a previous version of Flash. For example, Macromedia Flash 5 FLA files cannot be opened in Macromedia Flash 4.
A previous version of a SWF file can be exported for playback from a more recent version of the authoring tool. For example, Macromedia Flash MX can export SWF files formatted as version 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 movies.
