Static text published for Flash Player 8 does not appear on Flash Player 7

Issue

Static text in a SWF file published for Macromedia Flash Player 8 does not appear if viewed in Flash Player 7.

The following steps illustrate this issue:

  1. In a document open in Macromedia Flash 8, choose File > Publish Settings, click the Flash tab, and choose Flash Player 8 for the version.
  2. Click OK.
  3. Create a static text field.
  4. Type some text.
  5. Publish SWF.
  6. Play SWF in Flash Player 7.

The static textobject does not appear in Flash Player 7.

Reason

Flash 8 provides developers greater control of font rasterization, letting them specify the anti-aliasing properties for fonts. The improved anti-aliasing capabilities are available only when publishing SWF files for Flash Player 8. This also means that SWF files published for Flash Player 8 use these advanced properties. Consequently, static text in these SWF files will not be rendered by earlier Flash Player versions.

Solution

Developers needing to accomodate visitors who have not upgraded to Flash Player 8 should republish the SWF file using an earlier Flash Player version.

  1. Open a FLA file published for play with Flash Player 8
  2. Open the Publish Settings dialog box (File > Publish Settings), click the Flash tab and select Flash Player 7 from the Version pop-up menu.
  3. Publish the SWF with these settings.
