Flash 4 Will Not Export to QuickTime on Windows 95/98

Issue

On Windows 95/98 using the shipping version of Apple QuickTime 4.0, Flash 4 doesn't export to QuickTime. I receive an error, "Could not complete operation because of an unknown error."

Reason

There is an incompatibility between the shipping version of QuickTime 4.0 for Windows and the shipping version of Flash 4 for Windows. Attempting to export as QuickTime from Flash 4 causes the following error dialog: Could not complete operation because of an unknown error. This process worked properly up until the release version of QuickTime 4. This problem has been reproduced under Windows 95 and Windows 98. This does not appear to be a problem under Windows NT 4.0 (Service Pack 5).

Solution

Apple has fixed this problem with QuickTime 4.01. Please download the update at the Apple Web site. There is also a workaround for this issue. Create a dummy file with the same name as the file you're trying to create (i.e. create a bogus MYMOVIE.MOV) in the location where you will save your real movie. The QuickTime export will work properly. This problem only seems to occur the first time you try to export a movie.
