Landscape orientation in FlashPaper output

Issue

Macromedia FlashPaper allows users to easily convert documents into Flash format documents, which can be read by the Flash Player available automatically with most browsers. FlashPaper documents can be viewed and printed in different sizes and in either portrait or landscape orientation. However, the following issues can occur when working with documents in landscape orientation.

  • FlashPaper document is created as portrait orientation, although source document is landscape orientation.
When the source document orientation is landscape and the document is dragged into the FlashPaper application window, the document is converted without allowing the user to choose the orientation of the resulting document. The resulting FlashPaper document may have portrait orientation and the text may be rotated.
  • FlashPaper document in landscape orientation may print as portrait
In some instances when printing a FlashPaper document that is in landscape orientation, the printed output may be in portrait orientation.

Solution

For both issues, you can resolve or avoid the issue by actively using the print dialog box. For example, you can create a FlashPaper document by dragging any printable file into the open FlashPaper application window to create a FlashPaper or PDF version of the original document. Using this approach, however, may cause the first issue (a landscape-oriented document is created as a portrait-oriented FlashPaper document).

Use the print dialog box to create landscape-oriented FlashPaper documents

Instead of using the drag-and-drop method described above, use the File > Print menu to choose the orientation of the resulting FlashPaper document or PDF when creating landscape-oriented FlashPaper documents.

  1. Open the document in the application that created it (Freehand, Word, Visio, etc.)
  2. File > Print (to bring up the printer dialog box)
  3. Select Macromedia FlashPaper
  4. Click Properties
  5. Click Landscape and OK
  6. Click OK
  7. In the FlashPaper Window choose to Save the document and give it a name.

The resulting document will be in landscape orientation when displayed.

Set the orientation in the print dialog box when printing landscape-oriented FlashPaper documents
  1. Open the FlashPaper document file in FlashPaper.
  2. Click the Print button.
  3. In the Printer settings window, click the Preferences or Page setup... button. Click the Advanced tab.
  4. In the Layout Options section, choose Landscape.
  5. Click OK. Then, click the Print button.

The resulting document will be in landscape orientation when printed.
