Publish error if OS X folder name or filename is longer than 32 characters

Issue

When attempting to test or publish a Macromedia Flash SWF file that is embedded in a folder with a folder name and/or named with a filename that is longer than the Mac HFS+ standard (31 characters), Flash is unable to locate the SWF file and gives an error: "Error Opening URL file:///..."

The SWF will either open and run, or show a blank movie when the Output window is closed.

Solution

This is a known issue. As a workaround, change the folder name and/or FLA filename to fewer than 31 characters.
