Dashboard widgets unable to communicate with the internet

Issue

Dashboard widgets that make use of Macromedia Flash Player movies (SWFs) may present an alert that an outbound communication was attempted and blocked when trying to send or receive data from third party servers. The user is provided the option to accept the security restriction or open the Flash Player Global Settings page to specify that the SWF should be trusted.

When the user selects the Settings button on the alert, it will dismiss the dialog without opening the Flash Player Global Settings page needed to trust the SWF.

Reason

All local SWFs, even those used by Dashboard widgets, are subject to Flash Player 8 Security restrictions. Dialog boxes launched from SWFs in a Dashboard widget are not able to open a web browser. Thus, selecting the Settings button on the alert will only dismiss the dialog boxwithout opening the Flash Player Global Settings page needed to trust the SWF.

Solution

Users can manually navigate to the Global Settings Manager and trust the SWF by specifying the .wdgt bundle file on the hard drive as a trusted file/location.
